Dearborn's Historic District Ordinance was adopted in 1999. It follows a state-issued ordinance that over 75 cities have adopted. Dearborn's ordinance must be updated to match the current state ordinance. The outdated ordinance is not operational. As it stands, many significant local historic homes are not protected from demolition or extensive exterior renovations not in character with their neighborhoods.
The City of Dearborn provides a page on its city government website where you can send an email directly to all or select city council members.
Please pass an updated Historic District Ordinance for Dearborn. As a resident, I value the character of our historic homes and neighborhoods. I would like to have an ordinance in place that would allow neighbors to determine if a historic district is right for their neighborhood and to work with City Council to obtain that designation. I feel the potential tax benefits for individual home owners, as well as income streams for the city would be important additional benefits.
